York Liberal Democrats Stand with Unpaid Carers for Carers Week
This Carers Week, York Liberal Democrats are standing with the thousands of unpaid carers in our city who provide vital support to family members, friends, and neighbours. The national campaign seeks to raise awareness of caring and shine a light on the challenges carers face every day, many of which are felt acutely in York.
Local Liberal Democrat councillors are backing Ed Davey’s call for greater recognition and support for unpaid carers, who play a critical role in York’s health and care system.
Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, said:
“As a carer myself, I’ve had the immense privilege of meeting carers from all walks of life, all over the country. I’ve seen firsthand the incredible dedication, the quiet strength and sometimes the immense challenges that come with caring for someone.
“Because I know what it means to be a carer, I also know deeply why we need to help. Millions of unpaid family carers living in every one of our communities are propping up our health and social care systems, providing essential care to friends and family who need support.”
Cllr Carol Runciman, York Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, added:
“Here in York, thousands of unpaid carers are propping up our care system, yet many feel overlooked and unsupported.
“We’ve heard from residents caring for loved ones with dementia, chronic illness, or disability who are struggling to cope. Many are experiencing poor mental health, financial pressures, and social isolation and often don’t know where to turn for help.
“We need action to improve the visibility of carers in local services, provide greater financial and emotional support, and ensure every carer in York has access to the help they need. These residents deserve far more recognition and real support, not just kind words.”
