Prime Minister’s Words Must Be Matched by Action for York
York Liberal Democrats have welcomed comments from the Prime Minister highlighting the importance of public transport and housing working together, but say York residents are still waiting for Labour to deliver on major transport projects.
Speaking during a visit to York Central, Sir Keir Starmer said it was important that "housing, business, transport all come together" as discussions continue about increasing the number of affordable homes on the site.
Liberal Democrats agree that improving transport is essential if York is to support new homes, growing businesses and the city's economy. However, after three years of Labour running City of York Council, residents are still waiting to see meaningful progress on key transport schemes.
Construction of Haxby Station has yet to begin despite years of promises, while the future of the York Outer Ring Road dualling scheme remains in serious doubt.
Recently released correspondence from Roads Minister Simon Lightwood confirms that the Government has received no request for additional funding for the Outer Ring Road scheme from the Council or Combined Authority and that any such request would be refused.
York Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson Cllr Stephen Fenton said:
"Liberal Democrats want to see better public transport and improved transport links in York. The Prime Minister is right that housing, jobs and transport must go hand in hand.
"But residents will be wondering where the action is. Three years into a Labour administration, work on Haxby Station still hasn't started and the Outer Ring Road dualling scheme is effectively on life support.
"What's particularly concerning is that Government ministers have now confirmed that the council hasn't asked for additional funding for the Ring Road project. York deserves councillors who will stand up for our city and fight for the investment we need.
"Liberal Democrats have a strong track record of delivering transport improvements and securing investment for York. We will continue pressing for better public transport, progress on Haxby Station and the Outer Ring Road dualling.
"As York grows, residents need confidence that the infrastructure will be delivered alongside new homes and jobs. That requires a council prepared to make York's case loudly and persistently to government, regardless of which party is in power.
"York would be far better served by a Liberal Democrat council that is prepared to stand up for residents and fight for investment for the transport improvements our city needs."
