Local Liberal Democrat councillors have welcomed the official opening of the new Haxby Post Office, which opened its doors at 1pm on Monday.

Councillors attended the opening at the former Dutch Nurseries site on The Village, marking the return of a permanent post office to the heart of the community.

The opening follows months of campaigning and negotiations by Lib Dem councillors, alongside strong support from local residents and the Parish Council, to secure a long-term future for post office services in Haxby and Wigginton.

Councillor Andrew Hollyer said:

“It’s fantastic to see the new Haxby Post Office officially open and serving residents once again. This is a really important service for our community, and we were determined to make sure it wasn’t lost.

“This has been the result of months of hard work, with residents backing our campaign every step of the way. It’s great to see that effort deliver a permanent post office right in the centre of The Village.”

Councillor Ian Cuthbertson added:

“This is a great outcome for Haxby and Wigginton. Residents told us loud and clear how important it was to keep a post office in the community, and we worked hard to make that happen.

“From securing a temporary service to now delivering a permanent branch, this shows what can be achieved when councillors work closely with residents and local partners.”

Councillors also thanked Oaken Grove Community Centre for hosting the temporary post office, the staff who kept services running, and Haxby Town Council for helping fund the interim provision.

The new branch will now provide long-term certainty for residents and local businesses who rely on post office services.
