Liberal Democrats Call on Labour’s Environment Boss to Explain Fly-Tipping Surges Across York
The York Liberal Democrats are calling on Cllr Jenny Kent, Labour’s Executive Member for Environment and Climate Emergency, to explain the sharp rise in fly-tipping incidents across the city and her failure to provide answers promised to Full Council.
New figures reveal that 2,954 fly-tipping incidents have were reported in York in 2024/25, up from 2,500 in 2023/24 and 2,368 in 2022/23. Nearly 3,000 incidents marks a shameful new high for fly-tipping in the city.
The Liberal Democrats say this surge is a direct result of Labour’s waste policies, including:
- The introduction of the deeply unpopular Green Bin Tax
- A near doubling of bulky waste collection fees, from £27 to £52.50 for 4 to 10 items
Reduced opening hours at recycling centres, including closing Hazel Court on Wednesdays and cutting evening access from 7pm to 6pm at both Hazel Court and Towthorpe
Cllr Paula Widdowson, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Environment and Climate Emergency, said:
“Fly-tipping is soaring, and it’s no coincidence. Labour have made it more expensive and less convenient for people to dispose of their waste legally and now our streets, green spaces and rural roads are suffering the consequences.
“What’s even more concerning is that despite this record rise, Cllr Kent told Full Council in March that fly-tipping had not increased. When challenged, she had no explanation and promised to investigate and respond. Three months later, that response is still missing and the crisis is getting worse.
“People want to do the right thing, but Labour’s policies have created unnecessary barriers. Illegal dumping is filling the gap and the figures speak for themselves.
“Cllr Kent must explain the misleading claim made in her report and why no update has been provided as promised. If she cannot provide answers, she must seriously consider her position.”
