Liberal Democrat Councillors Congratulate York Knights on Historic Promotion to Super League
City of York Council Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Nigel Ayre and Deputy Leader Cllr Paula Widdowson have warmly congratulated the York Knights on their landmark promotion to the Betfred Super League, the first time a York rugby league side has reached the top flight in nearly four decades.
Cllr Nigel Ayre, Liberal Democrat Group Leader, said:
“This is a truly historic moment for York sport. Everyone connected with York Knights from the players and coaches to the volunteers and fans should be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved.
“The hard work both on and off the pitch has paid off, and their promotion is a testament to the club’s ambition. York’s place in the Super League will put us firmly on the national sporting map and bring a fantastic boost for local pride.”
Cllr Paula Widdowson, Liberal Democrat Deputy Group Leader added:
“The club’s journey over recent years has been remarkable. Their success reflects the very best of York. The LNER Community Stadium has become a hub of optimism, and the Knights’ promotion will inspire a new generation of young people to get involved in sport.
“We can’t wait to see the Knights take on the best in the Super League and show the rest of the country what York is all about.”
The Liberal Democrat Group said they look forward to working with the club and partners across the city to ensure York can make the most of this exciting opportunity to grow grassroots rugby and women’s sports.
