Lib Dems Welcome Boundary Commission Decision to Keep Council at 47 Councillors
York Liberal Democrats have welcomed the Boundary Commission’s confirmation that City of York Council will remain at 47 councillors, following the party’s submission urging the Commission to reject Labour’s proposal to increase the size of the Council.
Earlier in the review, Labour argued for expanding the Council to 53 councillors, a move that would have added over £250,000 in additional allowances over the next council term.
Liberal Democrat councillors say the Commission’s decision exposes the stark difference in priorities between the two parties.
Cllr Nigel Ayre, Liberal Democrat Group Leader, said:
“We are pleased that the Boundary Commission has accepted the Liberal Democrat recommendation to keep the Council size at 47. At a time when residents are struggling with the cost of living and the Council is under pressure to deliver essential frontline services, Labour’s proposal to spend an extra quarter of a million pounds on councillor allowances was completely out of touch.
“This decision is a win for common sense. The Liberal Democrats will always prioritise what really matters to residents: fixing potholes, protecting services like our libraries, and tackling the cost of living crisis. Labour wanted more councillors. We want better services.”
