Lib Dems Launch Recycling Survey

1 Apr 2026

Local Liberal Democrats are inviting residents to share their views on proposed changes to recycling services in York, following concerns that the council’s consultation does not fully capture people’s experiences.

The survey is available here:

This comes as City of York Council considers significant changes to recycling collections, including a move from boxes to wheelie bins and a shift from collections every two weeks to every four weeks.

Many residents have already raised concerns that the current consultation does not allow them to provide detailed written feedback or highlight specific issues that may affect them.

Liberal Democrats say it is important to better understand how these proposals would work in practice, particularly for households with limited space, larger families, or those who rely on more frequent collections.

They are also highlighting that the proposed changes are linked to a £500,000 reduction in the recycling collections budget agreed by the Labour administration.

Cllr Paula Widdowson, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Environment and Climate Emergency said:

“We know residents care strongly about recycling and want to see a system that works well for everyone."

“Many people have told us they don’t feel the current consultation gives them the opportunity to explain their individual circumstances or concerns."

“That’s why we’re asking residents to share their views with us directly, so we can build a clearer picture of how these changes, including moving to wheelie bins and less frequent collections, could affect people across York."

“It’s especially important we understand the impact on different households before any final decisions are made.”

The Liberal Democrats say the feedback will help ensure residents’ voices are properly heard as decisions on the future of recycling services are taken.
