Lib Dem Councillors Help Secure New Permanent Post Office for Haxby and Wigginton
Haxby and Wigginton’s Liberal Democrat councillors have helped secure a new permanent post office for the community following months of sustained campaigning and negotiations after the closure of the original post office was announced.
The new permanent post office will open at the former Dutch Nurseries store on The Village on 30 March 2026, bringing long-term certainty for residents. The existing provision at Oaken Grove will continue until 30 March.
Since the threat to the local post office first emerged, Lib Dem councillors have worked tirelessly to protect this vital service for residents. They successfully fought for a delay to the closure to allow alternatives to be explored and launched a petition opposing the move, which was backed by more than 2,000 local residents.
In Autumn 2025, councillors were also pleased to secure funding from City of York Council and Haxby Town Council to establish a temporary post office at Oaken Grove, ensuring residents continued to have access to essential services while a permanent solution was sought.
Throughout this period, councillors worked closely with the Post Office, potential postmasters and landowners to explore a wide range of possible locations, including the vacant Domino’s site and the former Barclays Bank. Unfortunately, none of these locations proved viable for a variety of reasons, and Post Office rules around building ownership meant the temporary service could not remain at Oaken Grove permanently.
The Post Office has also launched a consultation on access issues surrounding the new location. Liberal Democrat Councillors are urging residents to make their views known to the Post Office.
Councillor Andrew Hollyer said:
“We have always been clear that the new post office should be located on The Village, which is the most accessible location for residents and offers significant parking compared to other options in our community. While this has not been straightforward, we are pleased that a permanent solution has now been secured.
“We would encourage all residents to fill out the Post Office’s consultation on access to the new site.”
Councillor Ian Cuthbertson added:
“We would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign for a new post office for Haxby and Wigginton, particularly the thousands of residents who signed the petition.
“We would also like to thank Oaken Grove Community Centre for hosting the temporary post office, and Haxby Town Council for backing our call to fund it. Without that support, residents could have been left without a local post office for far longer.”
Councillor Richard Watson said:
“As local councillors, we have always been determined to ensure residents do not lose this vital service.
“We are aware that the location on The Village has some parking pressures, and that a bottleneck can form near the pharmacy at busy times. We will continue to work with the Post Office and the Council to make sure access for all residents, including those on foot or with mobility issues, is as safe and convenient as possible.
“The new permanent post office on The Village will provide certainty for residents and businesses who rely on these essential services. We are proud to have delivered this outcome for our community.”
