Labour’s Fair Funding Review to Strip £15 Million from York

30 Oct 2025

York’s Labour-run Council has confirmed that the city is set to lose £15 million under the national Labour Government’s so-called Fair Funding Review, a decision that local Liberal Democrat councillors say will hit residents hard and prove that Labour simply doesn’t care about York.

The change means that York (already the least well-funded council area in England) will now face even greater pressure on vital local services.

The Liberal Democrats are calling on the Council to publish a full breakdown of how the £15 million shortfall over the next 3 years will affect local services.

Cllr Nigel Ayre, Liberal Democrat Group Leader, said:

“York is already the least well-funded council area in the country, and this announcement just adds salt to the wound. Labour’s ‘Fair Funding Review’ is anything but fair, it’s a direct attack on York’s finances and on the services residents rely on every day.

“What’s worse is that Labour councillors locally seem happy to sit back and accept it. Instead of standing up for York, they’re standing by their party while our city loses out yet again.”

Cllr Paul Healey, Liberal Democrat Finance Spokesperson added:

“This is money that could have supported social care, invested in our communities, and protected our environment. Labour’s decision to take £15 million away from York shows where their priorities really lie and it’s clearly not with the people of this city.”

“Labour nationally is cutting York’s funding, and Labour locally is failing to fight back. Residents and businesses deserve better than a council that puts party loyalty before the city’s interests.”
