Labour Brings Nothing New on Haxby Station
Liberal Democrat Councillor Ian Cuthbertson has slammed Labour’s latest rail announcement as “recycled rhetoric dressed up as progress,” saying it brings nothing new or meaningful for local residents.
The highly publicised rail review led by Lord Blunkett and endorsed by Labour Mayors, including York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith, claims to lay out a bold new vision for Yorkshire’s railways. But when it comes to the long-promised Haxby Station, the plan is silent on funding, timelines, and delivery.
Cllr Ian Cuthbertson, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Haxby & Wigginton, said:
“We’ve heard all this before. The Liberal Democrats left this Labour-run Council with a fully funded plan to deliver Haxby Station. Now we have a Labour Government that has scrapped the funding stream, and a flashy report that recycles old commitments without providing a penny of new funding. It’s smoke and mirrors.”
“What residents want is spades in the ground, not more glossy documents and vague promises. The time and cost spent producing this report could have been better used actually starting construction. It’s just another press release, not a plan of action.”
