Liberal Democrat campaigners Luke Draper, Ian Eiloart and Andrew Mortimer are calling on City of York Council to fix the confusing and dangerous road signs and markings as you travel eastbound along Hull Road towards the roundabout near B&Q. Following the resurfacing of Hull Road last year, new road markings were painted incorrectly leading to driver confusion.

The road at this location is a 40mph two-lane dual carriageway. Prior to the new road markings being painted, the left-hand lane was marked and signposted for traffic continuing along Hull Road towards Grimston Bar and the right-hand lane as the turning towards the University along Field Lane. Unfortunately, the new road markings were painted incorrectly showing both lanes for through traffic towards Grimston Bar. This was partly corrected with the road marking closest to the roundabout fixed to show a right turn arrow. The road marking less than 50 meters before this wasn’t corrected however, which has led to the confusion.

Luke Draper said “As you travel outbound along Hull Road towards the roundabout you first see signs that show the right hand lane is for traffic travelling towards the University (see photo 1 attached), shortly after that a road marking shows both lanes for traffic travelling straight ahead along Hull Road towards Grimston Bar (see photo 2 attached) and less than 50 metres after this, very close to the roundabout junction, the correct markings are shown with a right turn arrow (see photo 3 attached).”

Andrew Mortimer said “We have been contacted by local residents who have said that the incorrect markings have led to drivers travelling along Hull Road finding themselves in the wrong lane at the last moment. Some have been seen cutting across in front of traffic in the other lane with near misses reported. We contacted the council at the start of the year to bring this to their attention but nothing has been done to fix the problem.”

Ian Eiloart said “The roundabout is already an accident hotspot. Recently a vehicle smashed into 2 sets of chevron barriers and a lamp post and before this another vehicle cut straight across the roundabout knocking down the tree growing in the middle (see photos 4 and 5 attached). It is time for the council to take action and make this simple change before someone is seriously injured.”
