On national Thank a Teacher day (Wednesday the 23rd June), York’s Lib Dem Councillors are celebrating and thanking York’s teachers.
The national Thank a Teacher Day gives us a chance to say a huge thank you to teachers, school staff and all those involved in providing exceptional support to children and young people despite the many challenges these past years have brought.
In thanking teachers for their commitment and work, Councillor Ian Cuthbertson also notes how Government must live up to their promises and support teachers and pupils with comprehensive mental health and education recovery plan and funding.
Councillor Ian Cuthbertson, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said:
“Coronavirus has brought significant challenges to everyone in our city and I continue to be heartened by how the people of York have responded to the pandemic.
“Over the last year, teachers and school staff across the city have worked tirelessly to adapt to the 'new normal' and they continue to do an incredible job supporting, teaching, and inspiring pupils. I would like to extend the whole city’s gratitude and appreciation to all who are working in York’s schools and supporting our next generation.
“We all know just how much support teachers continue to give to our children, so it is time the Government turned their kind words into action. The best way they can say ‘thank you’ would be by providing comprehensive mental health support to staff and pupils, as well the promised funding that would help schools meet the true scale of the challenge of helping those children who need extra support to catch up on lost learning.”
