Councillor for Heworth Without
Nigel has lived in Heworth all his life and is a former pupil of Hempland School, where his children now attend. After completing his Masters degree he settled in Galtres Road in 2003. He has been a local campaigner since that time and was first elected Councillor for Heworth Without in 2007.
Between 2009-11 he was appointed as Executive Member for Leisure Culture and Social Inclusion. In his time as Executive Member he oversaw the deal to reopen the Barbican Centre, the launch of York Explore, the opening of the new swimming pool at Energise and resolved the funding issues for the new £10 million swimming pool at York Sports Village. From 2015-2019 as Executive Member for Leisure and Culture he led on delivering York’s new Community Stadium, the opening of the new Explore facility at Bad Bargain Lane and the new £2million Burnholme sports centre.
His career since university started in retail, and since 2012 he has worked in the charity sector first with York Mind and latterly as Operations Manager for Healthwatch North Yorkshire. Outside politics he is a keen cricket and football player and enjoys music, films, reading and long dog walks with his family.
Following the 2019 Local Elections, Nigel was appointed to the role of Executive Member for Finance and Performance. His portfolio covers:
Customer Services, Bereavement and Registrar, Human Resources and Payroll, ICT, Information Management, Financial Management and Strategy, Investment, Financial Procedures and Risk Management, Performance and Business Assurance, Procurement Services and Commissioning, Asset Management, Operational Accommodation, Facilities Management, Health and Safety Operational Standards, Major Project delivery, including the Community Stadium and the Local Plan.
