As you may have seen reported in the local media, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT), has announced that it is planning to close New Earswick Swimming Pool permanently from March 2018.
According to York Press, JRHT, who own and manage the pool, have said that "significant financial, structural and operational challenges" have led to this decision. Although the running costs of the facility appear to be very modest compared with similar swimming pools, there is a need to invest significant money in the building housing the pool.
Local Liberal Democrat Councillors in Huntington & New Earswick ward are calling on JRHT to properly consult on the various proposals. We are concerned that the value of this facility to the community is not being considered, and that the decision to close goes against JRHTs stated social values. We would like to see discussions as to a way forward.
