Clean Air Day, which is due to take place on the 20th June 2019, is a national awareness day to learn about the effects of air pollution on our health, share good practice with others and help make a difference to the air in our communities and York more widely.

To combat the issue of air pollution, City of York Council has recently launched it’s ‘Kick the Habit’ campaign, encouraging drivers in York to turn off their engines when stationery.

From June, authorised council officers can issue fixed penalty notices of £20 to drivers who refuse to switch off their engines after being observed idling on the public highway for more than two minutes, rising to £40 if they don’t pay within 28 days. To alert drivers to the new enforcement action, anti-idling signage has been placed at key bus stops, hot spot areas and council run car parks across York.

Councillor Paula Widdowson, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change, commented:

“It is becoming clearer the harmful impact air pollution can have on people’s health and therefore, it is so important that we use Clean Air Day to promote awareness on the topic.”

“There are a wide-range of health problems that can be caused by air pollution and with each small step we take to change our habits and tackle pollution, we can positively improve the health of our communities.”

“As Liberal Democrats, we are proud to support Clean Air Day 2019 and with the recently launched ‘Kick the Habit’ campaign, we can help reduce pollution from idling vehicles.”

“I would strongly encourage everyone; those who live, work and visit York, to get involved and learn about how we can all make our air cleaner.”
