York Liberal Democrats are encouraging small businesses, including self-employed taxi drivers, to apply for the City of York Council Micro Business Grant to cover expenditure relating to the instalment of personal protective equipment.
As the city begins its recovery and businesses across York open their doors once again, it is crucial for residents to adhere to safety precautions to safely enjoy all that the city has to offer. This includes using face coverings in public transport and crowded places as well as adhering to social distancing rules.
Like many businesses across the country, the taxi trade has experienced significant setbacks throughout the crisis. As drivers return to work, it is crucial that they keep themselves and their clients safe, by taking all necessary safety precautions. To cover any expenses related to installing PPE, taxi drivers, as self-employed people, are encouraged to apply for the City of York Micro Business Grant.
The Micro Business Grant, set up by City of York Council in bid to support small local businesses through this challenging time, has already seen more than 120 small and micro businesses receive payments, with more being made each week. All small business owners and the self-employed are encouraged to apply before the 30th June deadline.
Applicants need to be registered to pay council tax in York and have until June 30 to apply for the scheme, with criteria, key information and application forms found on the City of York Council website: www.york.gov.uk/COVIDMicroGrant
Cllr Ashley Mason, Chair of Licensing and Regulatory Committee, said:
“We recognise that this is an exceptionally tough time for many businesses, including the taxi trade. Clearly the safety and wellbeing of drivers and their clients is of the utmost importance when operating in these difficult circumstances. For taxi drivers to operate safely it is crucial that they take all necessary safety precautions."
“With the deadline fast approaching, I would like to encourage small businesses and taxi drivers to apply for the City of York Micro Business Grant to aid them with any PPE expenditure, to make sure that they are keeping themselves and their clients safe.”
