The Environment Agency has commenced work on the Foss Upstream Storage Scheme just above Walbutts Sewage Works.
This is designed to limit the flow of the River Foss to 19 cu m per second and should protect Strensall, Earswick and everything downstream from the sort of devastating floods suffered in Dec 2015.
It will store up to 800000 cu m of water and completion is scheduled for Oct 2023. “The sooner this is completed, the better, commented Cllr Tony Fisher. “I hope I never again have to spend 5 hours up to my thighs in freezing cold, sewage contaminated flood water whilst directing traffic outside the Ship Inn”, Tony added. “I washed my jeans five times and they still stank, so I had to throw them away!”
