Meet your Lib Dem candidates for Fishergate this May.
Monta (known as ‘M’) is a third-year student of politics at University of York with a special interest in policy analysis. After being inspired by the 2010 General election campaign Monta became a member of the Liberal Democrats aged 13. Since then she has campaigned for the national party and several local candidates.
Since moving to York, three years ago, Monta has been an active member and campaigner for both the University of York and the local party branch of Liberal Democrats. She has spent her time at university campaigning on various issues including the lack of mental health support, the effect of the housing crisis on students, and the consequences of Brexit on the higher education sector in Britain.
Monta is also a passionate campaigner for LGBTQ+ rights, drug policy reform, electoral reform and decentralisation of British politics.
Outside of politics Monta enjoys singing in several youth choirs, following football and watching Doctor Who.
Paul grew up in Manchester and worked in London before moving to Fishergate in 2003, where he lives with his wife and two children.
After a career in finance he became a history lecturer at the London School of Economics and specialises in British political history. He has published several articles and a book about Liberal history.
He served as a school governor at Fishergate School for eleven years, during which time he chaired the finance committee and served a term as Chair of Governors.
Although never having stood for elected office before, he has been a Liberal supporter since the 1980s and had been motivated by the Brexit disaster to take a more active role in Liberal politics. His leisure activities include reading, watching football and cycling.
