£8.4m secured for electric buses, four local services set to benefit

City of York Council has been awarded over £8.4million to support the purchase of 44 fully electric buses – one of the key sustainable transport schemes for the city.

First Bus will contribute another £10.2M towards the project and will procure and operate the buses - replacing 44 existing diesel vehicles.

The new electric buses will operate the 1, 2, 4, 5/5A and 6 routes plus the HSB route between Rawcliffe Bar and the hospital. All diesel buses operating in the York area comply with the latest Euro VI standard. The vehicles are either brand new Euro VI buses or have had their engines upgraded to Euro VI.
