Statement from Councillor Keith Aspden, Liberal Democrat Group Leader

At tonight’s meeting two Conservative councillors announced that they would be resigning from the Conservative Group.

The Liberal Democrat Group believes that it would be sensible for all councillors to take a short time to reflect on tonight’s events. We suggested a deferral one week to confirm the joint administration’s policy priorities and to elect a new Council Leader.

Unfortunately, the Conservative Group did not support a deferral and therefore we felt we had no option but to vote against the nomination. The most important part of tonight’s meeting was to pass the joint administration’s budget to ensure that key council services are delivered for residents.

Our Group remains committed to working in the best interests of the city, delivering on major projects and protecting frontline services.

Following tonight’s meeting Councillor Andrew Waller is the Acting Leader of the Council and we will be working with the Conservative Group to agree the best way forward.
